Real Madrid's Lucas Silva Announces Retirement Due to Heart Problems

Real Madrid midfielder Lucas Silva has confirmed, on Instagram, his retirement from professional football at the age of 23.
  • Signed for Real Madrid in January 2015
  • Tipped for bright future
  • Went out last term on loan at Marseille
  • Looking forward to loan spell at Sporting for 2016/2017 season

The Brazilian arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu in January, 2015 and was tipped for a bright future as Los Blancos shelled out €14 million to sign him from Cruzeiro.

After a season on loan at Marseille, Silva had a proposed loan spell at Sporting to look forward to for the 2016/17 season.

Silva, however, failed the medical and reports named a serious heart condition as the reason.

Lucas Silva’s loan move to Sporting looked to be a mere formality on Saturday.

However, the midfielder traveled to Lisbon to undergo a standard medical test and after four hours Sporting’s medical staff announced that Silva had not passed, citing a heart condition for the complications.

Both clubs had reached an agreement for a one-season loan deal with the option to buy, due to be triggered next summer. But the heart problem was detected in the second round of tests and the deal subsequently fell through, AS reported

Neither Real Madrid, nor Silva, have made a formal announcement but his Instagram account appears to have confirmed the sad news.
